A Clear, Step-by-Step Path to a Warmer, Quieter, Healthier Home
Here’s how your project moves from first contact to completion — a simple, transparent sequence so you always know what happens next and why.
My process
A clear process helps you understand what is possible, what permissions may be needed, and what information is required before serious decisions are made.
Every home and every client is different, but most projects follow a similar path.
-
Initial conversation
We start with a short conversation about your home, what you want to change, and what is driving the project. This helps establish whether the work is likely to need planning permission, Building Control approval, or further investigation before design work begins.
-
Feasibility and options
At this stage I look at the existing house, the site, the constraints, and the opportunities. This may include measured survey work, review of previous approvals, early design options, and discussion of budget, priorities, and risk.
The aim is not to rush into drawings, but to understand the right direction before committing too much time or money.
-
Planning, if required
Some projects need planning permission. Others may fall under permitted development, or may need careful checking before that can be confirmed.
Where planning is required, I prepare the drawings and information needed for submission, and help present the proposal clearly to the planning authority.
-
Technical design
Once the direction is agreed, the project needs to become buildable. This stage develops the drawings, details, structure, insulation, drainage, fire safety, and other technical requirements needed for Building Control and for builders to price the work properly.
This is where many expensive problems can be avoided.
-
Construction support
When the project moves towards site, I can help with builder queries, drawing clarifications, design adjustments, and practical decisions during construction.
The level of support depends on the project and the client. Some people need help only up to approvals; others need advice through the building stage as well.
Not every project needs every stage. The right process depends on the property, the brief, the budget, and how much help you want along the way.
If you are considering work to your home, the best starting point is a first conversation.
